SCULPTURE
"STEP RIGHT UP" 2019
Step Right Up is an installation of interactive sculptures created by multidisciplinary artist and musician Cam Rowe. He has intertwined the roles of musician, artist, and inventor to create an abstract musical environment featuring geometric elements designed to respond kinetically and sonically to a viewer’s presence. As one enters the space, melodies and percussive elements will be triggered in different orders and speeds depending on how they navigate the installation. This installation puts the spectator in the role of the performer. The work is intended to make one question his or her definitions of art, sound, and music. By his use of automation, sensors and motors Rowe has created an interactive discovery process, a musical landscape that exposes the audience to an array of melodic textures. It creates an energy exchange between the work and the viewer similar to the energy exchange that happens in a live musical performance. Rigidly changing tempos of dissonant melodies are controlled by the audience’s interaction with the work. Step Right Up fuses fine art and music culture in order to provide a space for the intersection of sound, form, space, performance, and technology.
